What to Expect When Remodeling

September 1995

Remodeling is an ordeal, no doubt about it! There is disorder, dust, confusion and strangers in your home. The water and electricity are shut off. It seems everything is torn apart, but remember that it will all go back, better and more beautiful than before. It will be the room of your dreams!

Houses can last forever if they're well built. However, integral parts wear out on a rather predictable basis. As more homes are built and existing ones age, the need for remodelers increases. Make sure the one you select is qualified to do the work.

Where do you find a reliable contractor? Ask around. Is a neighbor or friend able to refer someone they've used? Would they use them again? Were any problems along the way resolved fairly? Ask at the local lumber store. Look for a local company in the Yellow Pages or an area magazine. Companies particularly care about their reputation in their own neighborhood. Take a good look at a remodeler's truck and place of business. If he cares for his own equipment and employees, there is a good chance he will care for your possessions also. Call the local building inspector to check on your selection - what better source than an enforcement officer who inspects the work?
